Cross-country: Le Pont du Diable
When you reach the Pont du Diable (Devil's Bridge), remember to look well ahead, otherwise you're in for a thrill or two! It's no coincidence that this is a via ferrata site!
Description
Your first descent is partly on a pleasant, if sometimes tricky, singletrack path which takes you to Devil's Bridge via the Esseillon Forts.
This is the itinerary's lowest point. From here, you'll take the Chemin du Petit Bonheur up along the forest road as far as Bramans. You'll finish at Aussois after making an elevation gain of approximately 250 metres. While not particularly difficult, this itinerary requires a reasonably good level of fitness as well as a degree of technical skill on the way down.
The devil's bridge stands more than 100 metres above the Arc riverbed. Legend has it that the bridge-builder was having trouble and called upon the devil to help him meet the deadline. The devil agreed in exchange for the soul of whomever would cross the bridge first. But it was a poor bargain because the first soul to cross the bridge was... a mountain goat!
